Maharashtra: 11 dead as fire breaks out at Ahmednagar district hospital, CM orders detailed inquiry

The blaze was reported from Ahmednagar Civil Hospital in the state, District Collector Rajendra Bhosale said.

10 dead in hospital fire in Maharashtra

At least 11 coronavirus patients died after a major fire broke out in the ICU ward of the civil hospital in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar on Saturday, officials said.

Ahmednagar district collector Rajendra Bhosale confirmed that 11 patients died and one patient was critical after the blaze erupted in the ICU section of the civil hospital, where COVID-19 patients were admitted.

Shankar Misal, chief of the fire department of Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation said the fire erupted around 11 am.

CM Uddhav Thackeray orders probe into hospital fire

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered an in-depth inquiry into the fire at Ahmednagar civil hospital, which claimed the lives of 10 COVID-19 patients. Expressing grief over the tragedy, Thackeray directed the administration to ensure that those responsible for it get strict punishment.

Uddhav Thackeray spoke to district guardian minister Hassan Mushrif and state chief secretary Sitaram Kunte, and asked them to ensure that other patients admitted there should get proper treatment without any disturbance, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said.

"The CM said the probe will be done by the district collector and the report should be submitted to the government," it said.
