Kagawa Prefectural Police are investigating the death of a male prisoner who was found hanging in a solitary cell in Takamatsu Prison on Saturday.

Police and prison authorities believe the man, in his 40s, committed suicide, Sankei Shimbun reported. According to prison officials, the inmate was hanging from a wash-basin faucet with three towels tied together inside his cell.

The prisoner was found at around 11:55 a.m. on Saturday. He was taken to hospital where he died at 10:20 p.m. The cause of death was hypoxic encephalopathy, a result of insufficient oxygen or blood flow to the brain.

A guard was making his rounds and saw no abnormalities 50 minutes before the inmate was found hanging.

Many questions, no answers at this stage. - Of course, in the interest of transparency, an independent investigation by an external agency will be conducted to verify:

“A guard was making his rounds and saw . . .

“***no abnormalities***”

. . . 50 minutes before the inmate was found hanging.” -

Three towels? Was he at a luxury spa?

What a luxury….But suicide? With three prepared towels and some force usually one can take some staff out of the game, get armed , clean the area up and leave the facility freely and unfollowed. lol

FourSquare, (yes, FourSquare) has some images of a room and a meal at Takamatsu Prison. Hanging from a solid, knee-high fixture. like the wash-basin is possible (the bookshelf is apparently too weak):

Just discussing solitary @zichi for death row inmates in yesterday’s “*Quote of the Day”*.

@zichi 5:51pm: “I think the logistics of doing that is very difficult. We don’t know what he was in prison for or how long was his sentence. If he was in a single cell his crime could have been a serious or violent one.

Is this news? Are suicides in Japan prisons that unusual that they make the news?

Does the cause of death make it news worthy?

Hanging from a wash-basin faucet with three towels seems a feat in itself.

How does one do that assuming that the wash basin was just 30 inches or so from the floor? Asking for a very stupid friend.

Oops?

The cause of death was hypoxic encephalopathy, a result of insufficient oxygen or blood flow to the brain.

That is the medical findings of cause of death. The psychological cause of death is probably because he was in isolation (which Japan's penal system seems to relish), and became mentally unstable.
