A technology consultancy in the North East is celebrating a ‘transformational’ contract with HMRC to accelerate the tax authority’s digital journey.

Newcastle firm Opencast will deliver new digital services at HMRC’s five UK-wide digital delivery centres to deliver digital services and help assemble teams to fill roles in digital, data and technology.

The contract win has come after Opencast was able to point to successful work with other Government departments, including the Department for Work and Pensions and the NHS.

Opencast - which announced at the start of this year that it would be recruiting for around 50 new roles - says it will be looking to expand its team on the back of the new work.

The company now plans to more than treble in size by 2025 and is hoping to have a headcount of nearly 200 by the end the year. It says its growth - which has seen revenues increase 55% year-on-year – is helping it to take on bigger and more complex contracts.

Opencast chief executive Tom Lawson said: “This is fantastic news for everyone at Opencast. We are incredibly excited to be moving forward with HMRC as it continues its digital transformation journey.

“The new HMRC work will have a transformational impact on the Opencast business. This is a massive win for us.”

Opencast specialises in building and running IT systems for the public sector, global financial services, and large enterprises. Its clients include JP Morgan Chase and Co, Sage, NHS Business Services Authority, HMRC, DWP, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

It was founded in 2012 by co-chairs Charlie Hoult and Mike O’Brien and is based at Hoults Yard in Newcastle’s east end, with staff located nationwide, including in Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds, York and London.

Mr Lawson said: “As a business we are all about working together to do the right thing and make a difference. This win is transformational in that it allows us to provide further interesting work for our team, offering our people the chance to learn and grow.

“Initially we anticipate that we will be looking for additional roles to put together agile scrum teams, as well as roles in finance, people and operations.”
