BERHAMPUR: Six inmates aged between 17 and 18 years, including a murder accused, fled from an observation home in the early hours of Monday by scaling the boundary wall after breaking the window grill.
"We have registered a case based on the report of the superintendent of the observation home and have launched an inquiry," said Ram Kumar Murmu, inspector in-charge of Baidyanathpur police station.
This is the second time in over a year that inmates have managed to flee from the home run by the women and child development department. On May 20 last year, seven inmates had managed to escape after assaulting the guards. While six of them were re-arrested, one of them is yet to be traced.
"Two inmates who fled on Monday are from
Ganjam and
Koraput districts each with the other two from
Gajapati and
Puri," said P R Rao, in-charge superintendent of the observation home. "While one of the inmates was allegedly involved in a murder case, others were here for multiple cases of robbery. All of them were here for less than a year," Rao added.
At least 14 CCTV cameras that had been installed in the observation home to keep tabs on the inmates were lying defunct for the past few months.
