Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the Flames are geared to go and shine at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals  despite the team’s poor showing in the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualification campaign.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu was reacting to President Lazarus Chakwera’s call for the Flames to defy the odds and perform beyond expectations at the continental showpiece.

Nyamilandu said: “The State President has dared the Flames to go there and win and we are taking it as a boost.

“It’s a moment to treasure because it has been a tough road and long wait to qualification since 2010.

“I can assure His Excellency that we will do all we can to improve technically and to turn things around by the time we play in Cameroon.

“This bubble won’t burst until it is over. We will continue to savour the moment while bracing ourselves for the battle ahead.”

Speaking during the Kuipatsa Moto Flames VVIP Fundraising Dinner he hosted at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Saturday night, Chakwera said: “There was once a time when the Malawi National Football Team was known for its winning habit. In those days, even when we did not win trophies, we would still win medals.

“Time has come to reclaim that winning mindset, but make no mistake that reclaiming that mindset will not just come by wishful thinking.”
