Airline TUI has given an update to passengers as rules for travel change due to the emergence of the new Omicron Covid variant.

The new changes mean all travellers returning to the UK will now need to take a PCR day two test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.

This change came into effect at 4.00am on Tuesday November 30 2021.

Customers who do not wish to travel and are due to travel up to and including December 19 can amend their holiday free of charge.

In a statement, TUI said: "Following the UK Government announcement, we are aware of the changes to post travel testing requirements. All travellers returning to the UK will now need to take a PCR day two test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.

"This change will come into effect at 04:00am on Tuesday 30 November 2021. Any customers who do not wish to travel and are due to travel up to and including 19 December can amend their holiday free of charge. Unfortunately, we’re not able to offer refund credit notes to our customers.

"Holiday changes can be made by calling us on 0203 451 2688."

Early evidence suggests Omicron - first found in southern Africa - has a higher re-infection risk. But scientists say it will take about three weeks before it is known how the variant impacts on the effectiveness of vaccines.

It comes after 14 cases of the new variant were detected in the UK.

Boris Johnson is expected to set out plans for the booster jab programme in England at news conference later on Tuesday.
