Puri: Cyclone Jawad likely to make landfall on Saturday night

Odisha special relief commissioner PK Jena on Friday said that cyclone Jawad may make landfall in Puri district between Saturday evening and Sunday morning before recurving north, northeast and head towards West Bengal.

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha special relief commissioner PK Jena on Friday said that cyclone Jawad may make landfall in Puri district between Saturday evening and Sunday morning before recurving north, northeast and head towards West Bengal.
“As per the IMD, the cyclone may touch somewhere in Puri district,” he said, adding Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts will have maximum impact as the cyclone may trigger extremely heavy rainfall on its path.

People from low-lying areas and from kutcha houses will be evacuated, he said.
At 5.30am on Friday, the IMD said, the deep depression lay centered at the west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal, about 580 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 670 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 760 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha).
It is likely to continue to move northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It is likely to reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by Saturday morning.
Thereafter, it is likely to recurve north northeastwards and move along north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts during the subsequent 24 hours with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.
Sky remains overcast in many coastal districts, including state capital Bhubaneswar on Friday.
