Amman, Dec. 5 (Petra) - The Ministry of Agriculture said livestock imports from Georgia will be carried out according to 'clear and transparent' mechanisms.
Speaking at a meeting Sunday, with a number of sheep breeders, Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat said Georgian fat-tailed sheep are not allowed from entering the local market and any violations to this procedure will lead to suspending imports 'immediately'.
The ministry, he said, will conduct a monthly review of the Georgian sheep deliveries to Jordan and their impact on the local sector, to avoid any 'adverse' impact on the local sheep.
A decision was taken to diversify the sources of meat import, to provide the consumer with the 'right' quality and price, Hneifat said, adding that the ministry will not back down from this policy aimed to ensure sufficient quantities of the product and preserve the food stock.
The ministry will not allow monopoly of any substance by any particular importer, he said, adding that there is no monopoly on importing fresh, chilled and frozen red meat.
In this regard, he said the ministry granted 18 licenses to import livestock during the past months.
