GoI has signed a deal to manufacture Russia’s AK-203 rifles in UP’s Amethi. This rugged, reliable assault rifle belongs to the AK-47 family of arms, killing tools like few others. The Gun: The AK-47 and the Evolution of War, a 2010 book by CJ Chivers, tells the origin story of the iconic rifle, its unstoppable spread and its effects on global security.

It began in the USSR as Stalin’s secret military project. The AK-47 was Avtomat Kalashnikova (the automatic by Mikhail Kalashnikov) and 1947 was the year the prototype was made. Basic and sturdy, it packed enormous firepower into a compact size. While Soviet accounts are unreliable, and lionised the unlettered Sergeant Mikhail Kalashnikov as proletarian hero and symbol of socialist excellence, the gun was a product of state planning and designed by committee. The Soviet Union may not have made good toothpaste or soap, toilets or refrigerators, but it did direct its economy towards weapon-making excellence.
