Magadh University authorities submit files to SVU on financial and appointment irregularities

The Magadh University authorities have handed over several files related to alleged unauthorised financial transactions, purchases and irregular ‘backdoor’ appointments made in the varsity during tenure of its Rs 30 crore scam tainted VC Dr Rajendra Prasad to Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) for investigation against him.

PATNA: The Magadh University authorities have handed over several files related to alleged unauthorised financial transactions, purchases and irregular ‘backdoor’ appointments made in the varsity during tenure of its Rs 30 crore scam tainted VC Dr Rajendra Prasad to Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) for investigation against him.
Sources said SVU has recorded statements of several MU officials and it is to quiz higher authorities including MU registrar from Monday in connection with the scam and irregularities.

Sources said files of irregular appointments of at least 12 persons including one on post of assistant professor and all hailing from Uttar Pradesh, have been supplied to SVU.
They also said SVU has also been provided with information about several of these persons residing in MU guest house since a year without paying rent or any other charges due to their approach and influence till ‘top’.
“SVU has been also provided files of books purchase including those not required in syllabus, without tender last year,” a source said. He also said purchase was of Rs 1.16 crore while UGC had given Rs 1 crore to MU for it.
Source said SVU had served a 12-point questionnaire to varsity on purchase of e-books worth Rs 2.5 crore on Prasad’s direction by diverting fund of examination section even when there is no e-library.
“A three-member committee replied the queries. Files related to e-book purchase were seized by SVU from VC’s residence in Gorakhpur,” a source said.

They said 15 lakh answer booklets were purchased from a private firm without a tender for which Rs 75 lakh was paid during Prasad’s tenure. “This purchase was actually planned through GeM portal by previous VC,” a source said.
A senior bureaucrat said after SVU raid against Prasad, a person sent documents including official letters and those sought through RTI from five state varsities and one from Jharkhand to officers and ministers in state, central government alleging that a Delhi based publishing house owned by two brothers is running a scam in varsities of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh of book purchase.
“Complainant has alleged that there are six subsidiary firms too, for supplying books to varsities. The complainant has also alleged that the firm is even influencing appointments in varsities,” he said.
The SVU had conducted raids against Prasad after booking him in Rs 30 crore corruption case on November 16. SVU had unearthed Rs 3 crore disproportionate assets of Prasad, recovered Rs 90 lakh, foreign currencies and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh from his Gorakhpur residence from raid on November 18.
