A Very British Scandal began earlier this week, a BBC retelling of the infamous 1963 divorce of Margaret and Ian Campbell, otherwise known as the Duke and Duchess of Argyll.

Their acrimonious split came as Ian (Paul Bettany) was an abusive addict while Margaret enjoyed as many as 88 extra-marital affairs.

In revenge, Ian released sordid photographs of the Duchess with other men, and the case became one of the most controversial of the 20th century.

The BBC described: "A Very British Scandal turns this scandal inside out in order to explore the social and political climate of post-war Britain, looking at attitudes towards women, and asking whether institutional misogyny was widespread at the time.

"As her contemporaries, the press, and the judiciary sought to vilify her, Margaret kept her head held high with bravery and resilience, refusing to go quietly as she was betrayed by her friends and publicly shamed by a society that revelled in her fall from grace."

Claire is already recognisable to most after playing Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's The Crown, before Olivia Colman took over.

The 37-year-old has lived all over the country - she was born in Stockport and grew up in Manchester and Leeds before moving to Buckinghamshire.

It was when she attended Liverpool John Moores university that she realised she loved acting, and so trained at the Oxford School of Drama for one year before moving to London.

She played the largely forgotten part of Chloe Webster on the medical drama Doctors, but her first big role was as Julia in BBC drama Being Human, which also starred Russell Tovey and Aidan Turner.

In 2008, she landed the lead role of Amy Dorrit in the BBC adaptation of Little Dorrit and also starred in the film Season Of The Witch alongside Nicolas Cage.

She continued to land period roles, also playing Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall opposite Damien Lewis. And it was in 2016 that Claire was cemented as a household name when she won the role of the Queen, winning an Emmy for her stellar performance.

In 2014, Claire married actor Stephen Campbell Moore, who starred in The History Boys and War of the Worlds.

He has also appeared in Downton Abbey as Major Chetwode and in Johnny English Reborn as the Prime Minister.

They had met on the set of Season Of The Witch in 2011, and welcomed a daughter named Ivy Rose in March 2015.

But three years later, it was revealed they were splitting up, months after Stephen, 42, underwent his second life-saving operation to remove a brain tumour.

They said in a statement: "We have separated and have been for some time.

"We do however continue as great friends with the utmost respect for one another."

A Very British Scandal contains some rather racy scenes, and Claire has admitted no matter how hard her colleagues try to make her feel comfortable while filming them, she never does.

"It's a really hard line because basically you do feel exploited when you are a woman and you are having to perform fake sex on screen. You can't help but feel exploited," she told The Guardian.

"It's grim – it's the grimmest thing you can do. You feel exposed. Everyone can make you try to not feel that way but it's unfortunately the reality."

But Claire knew the scenes were imperative to the story.

"My thing was that I felt very strongly that it had to be in it, but I wanted it to be female. I did not want it be that sort of awful climactic sexual experience you often see on the cinema screen," she said.
