A woman has been left seriously injured after colliding with a van in Yarm.

Emergency services were called to The Spital just before 7.00am on Thursday to reports of an accident involving a pedestrian and a white Peugeot van.

The road between the roundabout at the end of Yarm High Street to Leven Road was shut for six hours while investigations were carried out at the scene.

The pedestrian, a 62-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries in the crash and and is receiving treatment at Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

Cleveland Police confirmed the 61-year-old driver of the van has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

The force is appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

In an updated statement, a spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, and hasn’t already spoken to police to call 101, reference 220772.

"This includes anyone with dashcam or CCTV which may assist officers.

"Officers not only want to see footage from The Spital at time of the incident but also from the time surrounding the incident, from the area of the Shell Petrol Station on Thirsk Road (where the A67 joins Thirsk Road), up to The Spital where the collision occurred."
