Karnataka: 50 fall ill after eating prasadam at Kolar temple

Over 50 devotees who consumed prasadam at Gangamma temple at Beeraganahalli village of Kolar's Srinivaspur taluk fell ill on Saturday and were rushed to hospitals. They are out of danger.

SRINIVASAPUR: Over 50 devotees who consumed prasadam at Gangamma temple at Beeraganahalli village of Kolar's Srinivaspur taluk fell ill on Saturday and were rushed to hospitals. They are out of danger.
The temple had distributed prasadam on the occasion of New Year, tahsildar Srinivas said, adding those who fell ill included 19 school students. On request from the temple authorities, two families from the village prepared lemon rice and kesaribath as prasadam and distributed it to the devotees arriving at the temple.
By evening most of the school going children who had consumed the prasadam while coming back from school began vomiting and complained of nausea. Soon similar sysmptoms were noticed in some elderly people of the village.
Meanwhile, police have taken up a case and arrested two persons. Health authorities visited the temple and collected the food samples and also the utensils used to prepare it. Dr Venkatachala, who runs a nursing home, said the devotees might have developed nausea owing to food poisoning.
