Gujarat logs 5,600 new Covid cases, active infections top 22,000

Gujarat on Saturday added 5,677 new Covid cases, the highest daily tally in the past seven months, taking the number of active cases past 20,000 at 22,901. In terms of active cases, Gujarat is seventh among Indian states.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat on Saturday added 5,677 new Covid cases, the highest daily tally in the past seven months, taking the number of active cases past 20,000 at 22,901. In terms of active cases, Gujarat is seventh among Indian states.
It was the first day of 2022 with no Covid deaths. The test positivity rate (TPR) in Gujarat continued to rise with 7% on Friday, with Ahmedabad recording as high as 22%.
Meanwhile, an estimate of Covid cases among school students put the figure at 1,000 in the state.
However, the state education department claimed to have no consolidated data. Surat city alone has over 500 cases according to the estimates. The number includes both online and offline students, they added.
According to the Union health ministry, now five districts of Gujarat have over 5.5% weekly TPR with Ahmedabad at 16.2%, followed by 6.4% in Anand, 5.7% in Kheda, 5.7% in Rajkot and 5.5% in Vadodara. On Saturday, 31 out of 33 districts of Gujarat recorded at least two new positive cases. Now all 33 districts have active cases - a rise from 23 a month ago.
