Anyone taking a quick stroll along Ecclesall Road is sure to find something to delight them.

Although, it might be a struggle to quickly pass the entire street.

Spanning from St Mary's Gate in Sheffield city centre to beyond Endcliffe Park, the road is lined with welcoming pubs, decadent cocktail bars and popular restaurants.

And for anyone looking to work up an appetite before making a lunch stop, there are plenty of independent shops to choose from, both on the main strip and in nearby Sharrow Vale.

It is also a stone's throw away from Sheffield's Botanical Gardens.

So it is no wonder one resident described Ecclesall Road as the "street out of town where people like to be."

Keen to find out what life is like for those who live in the trendy street, I headed down to ask those who call the popular destination their home.

First, I met Jo, who was delighted to be able to tell me how much she loves the area where she has lived for the past two decades.

Despite having spent so much time there, she enjoys visiting the numerous shops every day, pulled in by the allure of the independent sellers.

But she thinks the real attraction, and the reason so many people from across the city flock to the area, is the variety of food spots.

Ecclesall Road has almost every type of restaurant and cafe you could want, from a Starbucks and Pizza Express, to a whole host of beloved independent outlets, including Uncle Sam's Diner, which is a favourite with the BBC's Dan Walker.

"And everyone comes to eat here," says Jo.

"There's something for everybody because it is so diverse," she explains.

Another local, Abby May, tells me exactly the same but in regard to the variety of shops on the road.

The store manager at White Rose, a charity shop on the road, explained you can find something to suit everyone's pocket thanks to the mix of designer stores and the "charity shop mile".

White Rose, which opened two shops in the road this year, stocks everything from Primark to Prada, she said.

The street attracts an eclectic mix of residents too, according to Jo.

Home to Sheffield Hallam University's Collegiate Campus at one end, many students live among the family homes found on the side streets connected to the main road, or in the flats above the shops.

But they are a welcome addition, according to Jo, who says they add to the mix of people living in the area.

And everyone mixes well, according to another long-term resident, Amy, 33.

She said: "It feels really homely, everyone is friendly, and it feels quite safe as well.

"You can leave your wallet and probably get it back."

Amy herself was proof of the friendly welcome you are likely to receive on Ecclesall Road, excitedly pointing out her favourite places to visit and offering me suggestions.

She added that the local parks are one of the area's biggest attractions.

But life in the idyllic road does come with a price. "It's quite expensive," said Amy.

The sentiment was echoed by Jo, who pointed out "things open and close quite fast" - she believes due to the cost of rent.

But she added that the community likes to support local businesses and they will all rally to help a shop if it is struggling.

The friendly resident also said she does not think this is the result of a change in the area but that it has "always been busy and trendy".

Despite this acknowledgement as she bid her goodbyes, Jo joked: "Don't tell everybody because we like it as it is."
