On January 9, 2021, a fire claimed the lives of 10 babies inside the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Bhandara hospital. A year later, the district general hospital, 60 km away from Nagpur, has now been renovated with fire safety measures in mind. The 350-bed hospital now features smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and fire hose pipes throughout its campus. Other fire safety provisions such as a large water tank are also close to completion. Meanwhile, parents who lost their children in the tragedy, are still struggling to overcome their loss. As per reports, a fire broke out inside the sick newborn unit after which the nurses raised an alarm. While seven babies were rescued, 10 lost their lives in the tragedy. Families of the deceased newborns were later compensated with Rs 8 lakh each.
