Secret letters exposing criminal-PI nexus flood CP

Secret letters exposing criminal-PI nexus flood CP
Nagpur: Several senior inspectors and staff at police stations are learnt to have earned the wrath of city police chief (CP) Amitesh Kumar after citizens anonymously alerted him about alleged malpractices through secret letters. The letters are learnt to have triggered a series of strict actions and warnings from the top cop.
Kumar, who is also learnt to have sent ‘decoys’ to check corruption, had managed to keep actions from state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) against city police to a minimum last year.
In 2021, 15 cops were trapped from different parts of six districts of eastern Vidarbha by state ACB, of whom only one was from Nagpur city.
Sources said there has recently been a flurry of secret letters landing up at the CP’s office, informing him about the nefarious activities of some cops posted at different units — especially police stations — including them being hands-in-glove with racketeers and gangsters, and other unchecked illegal activities.
The senders, generally localites or social workers, are learnt to have refrained from identifying themselves, fearing a vengeful action in future from the cops about whom they have alerted the CP.
While most CPs in the past had been trashing such letters, Kumar gets each letter’s contents meticulously verified. Sources said Kumar tries to scrutinize the letters personally before summoning the personnel concerned for clarifications. Repeated allegations have led to strict measures by Kumar, apart from warnings.
When asked about the veracity of the secret letter contents, Kumar said he uses his experience of serving at multiple places as CP (Amravati and Aurangabad) and police superintendent, apart from being state intelligence chief, to gauge the gravity of the allegations. “We have a well-oiled machinery in place to follow a tip-off to find out the factual situation,” he said.

It’s learnt that Kumar reshuffled staff of detection branches and other sub-units of a police station and also took disciplinary action against the police station in-charges if the allegations against them turned out to be true during the process of verification.
Though the secret letters are often used to settle scores or just sent as pranks, they are being seriously dealt with by the CP. “Crime branch has repeatedly been pressed into action to act against illegal activities and racketeers mentioned in the secret letters,” said a cop.
It’s learnt that even cops, masquerading as informers, had in the past sent secret letters to the CP to get their rivals at other police stations implicated. “The cops playing truant against colleagues by misusing secret letters have been also been identified and acted upon by the CP,” said a police source.
