3 wounded in Tokyo university knife attack on exam day
Tokyo, Jan 15 (EFE).- Three people, including two students, suffered wounds in a stabbing attack near the University of Tokyo on Saturday, the first day of nationwide varsity entrance examinations, police said.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that police arrested a 17-year-old suspect on the spot after the stabbing incident.
Police said the victims were conscious and receiving treatment at a hospital.
The attacker hit the victims around 8:30 a.m. outside one of the gates to the university’s main campus in the capital’s Bunkyo district on the first of two days of staggered entrance exams.
Two of the injured are high school male and female students, who were to sit for the exams, the National Center for University Entrance Examinations said. The third victim is a septuagenarian male.
Some 3,700 people had registered for the entrance examinations at the Tokyo center.
The organizers held the examinations despite the incident.
The suspect was arrested for attempted murder, said the police.
It was the latest in a series of knife attack incidents in Japan.
Last weekend, a man held a restaurant manager at knife-point for several hours until he was rescued.
A man dressed as a fictional character, the Joker, injured 17 people by stabbing several of them and setting a fire inside a train in Tokyo on Halloween in November. Police identified the suspect as Kyota Hattori.
In early August, a man wounded ten persons in another knife attack on the Odakyu railway line. The incident had inspired Hattori.
In mid-August, two men were stabbed at Ueno station in a random attack, and two other people were injured after a man sprayed acid on the face of an old acquaintance, also in the capital. EFE
