Lucknow: Abdullah Azam, the son of Rampur MP Azam Khan, was released from Sitapur jail on Saturday night after languishing in the prison for 23 months. His release was, however, delayed due to a discrepancy in the release order which was amended and sent to the jail authorities.
Abdullah along with his father Azam was lodged in Sitapur jail on February 27, 2020. Azam is still in jail.
According to jail superintendent Suresh Singh, Abdullah had 43 cases in his name from Rampur for which the jail authorities have got the release order.

Singh told TOI that in one release order, a discrepancy was found following which a fresh order was sent from Rampur court, resulting in delay. Abdullah’s supporters had gathered outside the jail to greet him.
SP MP from Rampur, Khan had surrendered in Rampur court and was sent to jail in a case of forgery. Later, he was shifted to Sitapur jail along with his wife Tanzeen Fatima and son Abdullah.
In 2019, Allahabad high court had declared the election of Abdullah as SP MLA null and void on the grounds that he was below 25 years of age when he had filed his nomination papers for the 2017 Assembly elections from Suar constituency.
Later, the case was petitoned in the Supreme Court which in January 2020 declined to stay an order of Allahabad high court. Now with the release of Abdullah, he has another chance to contest an election.
