PATNA: The JD(U) on Saturday decided to go it alone in Uttar Pradesh assembly polls after the BJP "did not count it as an ally" in the poll-bound state.
JD(U)'s Uttar Pradesh state president Anoop Singh Patel told TOI that his party would release the first list of candidates on January 18 after a meeting with senior party leaders in Lucknow the same day.

Patel said the JD(U) decided to go it alone in UP after BJP leader and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while addressing a press conference in New Delhi, did not take the name of the party as its ally in Uttar Pradesh.
Pradhan, while talking to mediapersons after releasing the first list of BJP candidates for the first two phases of UP polls, categorically said the party has an alliance with just two parties - Union minister Anupriya Patel-led Apna Dal and Sanjay Nishad-led NISHAD Party.
JD(U) is an ally of the BJP in Bihar and also at the Centre. In Uttar Pradesh, the JD(U) had earlier announced to contest the assembly polls in alliance with the BJP and also authorised its senior leader and Union steel minister R C P Singh to hold seat-sharing talks with the saffron party.
Patel said senior JD(U) leader and party's Uttar Pradesh incharge K C Tyagi would reach Lucknow on January 18 and release the first list of party candidates.

Patel said a meeting of JD(U) leaders, including all state-level office-bearers, district presidents and heads of all frontal organisations would also be held in Lucknow on December 18 to energise the organisation for the assembly election.
Patel said the JD(U) had collected biodata of aspiring candidates for 65 assembly seats while the party was in the process of holding seat-sharing talks with the BJP. "As of now, we will field our candidates on 65 seats. The number of constituencies may increase later on," Patel said.
Contacted over the phone, Tyagi said the decision to go solo in UP was taken after consultation with top party leaders. He added that the actual number of seats would be decided after proper consultation with the state-level party functionaries.
