LUCKNOW: Party workers in Gorakhpur were beaming with enthusiasm after the name of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was announced as the BJP candidate from the Gorakhpur Urban seat.
He has been a five-time MP from the seat, but it would be for the first time he will contest an assembly poll from the district which has been a saffron stronghold for 33 years.
When Yogi Adityanath's name was declared, he was in the Gorakhnath Temple.
As soon as the news came in, his supporters shouted slogans and danced on the beats of the nagara. Many of his followers rushed to the temple to congratulate him. Sources said the processions and sense of celebration among people made it seem like Yogi Adityanath had already won the election.
Elated at his candidature, local BJP leaders said they were all geared up to campaign for this election. "CM Yogi has been Gorakhpur MP since 1998. There is no doubt that he has his own network and goodwill in the area, so working during the election will not be difficult for him. On the other hand, if he were to contest from Ayodhya or Mathura, the party's election operations team would have to work anew," said political analyst Rajeev Dutt Pandey.
Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan said: "Jhari ke vote giri, ek tarfa jitihein Maharaj ji (Votes will rain and Maharaj ji will win with a land slide). He will register a record victory which nobody would have seen. Every single person is standing in his support. Right now he has only been given a ticket and the entire city is dancing. Imagine what will happen when he wins."
Gorakhpur mayor Sita Ram Jaiswal called the decision to field Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur as the correct one, saying that the CM went to Ayodhya frequently and worked for the city tirelessly during the five years of his government and that he would continue this trend.
In Gorakhpur (Urban) assembly seat, there are 19% Brahmins, 9% Rajputs, 8% Kayasthas, 9% Saithwars, 4% Yadavs, 18% Vaishyas, 17% Muslims, 11% Nishads and 5% Dalits.
CM Yogi has worked tirelessly in the area and has a very positive relationship with the people, said political analysts.
