The introduction of compulsory Covid jabs for NHS staff will include retail workers working on hospital grounds.

This includes all retail workers at University Hospital's retail area, which includes outlets like M&S Food, WH Smith and Subway.

Currently, new rules that come into effect on April 1 require all those undertaking CQC regulated activities in England must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by April 1.

Yesterday, nursing and midwifery leaders urged Sajid Javid to delay the introduction of compulsory Covid jabs for NHS staff citing concerns mandatory jab rules will cause an exodus of frontline personnel.

There are already widespread NHS staff shortages with absences linked to the Omicron variant.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust said: "In line with new government legislation, all those employed to undertake CQC regulated activity; routinely working within - or based in or around - a clinical area and/or who may have incidental contact with a patient or service user whilst on Trust premises are required to be fully vaccinated.

"This will include our partners on hospital sites. The Trust is currently undertaking a substantial programme of work both internally and with partners to deliver that requirement in full."

University Hospital Coventry confirmed that this rule applies to retail staff on-site too.

The Mirror reported this week that an estimated 90,000 health workers are still unvaccinated.

The TUC fears the rule will spark a mass exodus of staff from a service that already has 93,000 vacancies.

Frances O’Grady, the TUC’s general secretary, said: “We are in the middle of an NHS staffing crisis, born not only from Covid absences but also long-term problems that need long-term solutions. Now is not the right time to introduce more bureaucracy.”
