Tests down due to Sunday, but Covid surge continues in region
Nagpur: The number of daily Covid tests fell to 13,173 on Monday against the daily average of 22,000 maintained last week, on account of the previous day being Sunday holiday. Despite the dip in tests, the number of new cases continued to hover around the 4,000 mark, at 3,709.
On Monday, the test positivity rate surpassed 28%. It was more than 30% in Gadchiroli and Bhandara, and near 40% in Chandrapur.
As more tests are resulting positive, this can be an indicator that Vidarbha is heading towards the third wave’s peak.
Nagpur reported 2,451 new cases out of 8,690 tests done in last 24 hours, implying a positivity rate of 28.2%. Three deaths were recorded in the district — all of them were incidental findings. A 10-year-old sickle cell patient died in IGGMCH, while a 53-yr-old woman who was brought to the same hospital after she suffered from a massive cardiac arrest also died. A 71-year-old man from Mahal died due to multi-organ failure.
All three patients tested positive for Covid-19 during their hospital stay but the cause of death could be their pre-existing severe illness. A patient from another district who was hospitalized in a private hospital died during treatment in Nagpur, taking the day’s toll to four.
Similarly, two patients died in Gadchiroli — a 70-year-old man from Chamorshi and a 50-year old from Gadchiroli who suffered cardiac arrest. In Gondia, a senior citizen with multiple co-morbidities died in GMCH. In all, seven deaths were reported in Vidarbha for the second day in a row on Monday, but all of them were incident findings.
The number of recoveries increased to 1,506 on Monday. Now, the region has 22,779 patients under treatment, more than 85% of whom are in home isolation.

Wardha: Out of 154 test reports in last 24 hours, 45 were positive for coronavirus, taking the casetally to 50,798. Meanwhile, 27 patients were discharged, pushing the tally of recoveries up to 48,392 and leaving 1,038 patients under treatment. No new death was reported and the toll remained unchanged at 1,328.
Yavatmal: The district reported no death during the last 24 hours, keeping the toll unchanged at 1,788. Currently there are 732 patients under treatment, of whom 54 are under hospital treatment and 678 are in home quarantine. The administration received 429 test reports on Monday.
Of the 73,943 Covid patients so far, 71,428, including 40 on Monday, have recovered. The test positivity rate is 9.21%, death rate is 2.42% and the daily positivity rate is 21.68%. The district has 1,715 beds for Covid patients.
Chandrapur: The number of fresh cases went down to 179 after three days with new cases in excess of 250, on Monday. In all, 95 recoveries and zero casualties during the day left 1,580 patients under treatment.
There were 454 tests during last 24 hours. The Covid caseload has climbed to 90,906 and the recoveries tally stands at 87,781. The toll is 1,545 now. A total of 8,21,033 samples have been tested so far, out of which 7,28,607 have been found negative.
Amravati: A spike of 276 cases took the district's caseload to 98,173, while 56 recoveries took the total to 95,121. This left 1,486 patients under treatment.
Gadchiroli: Two deaths were reported in a day which took the toll to 751. Out of 519 tests conducted in last 24 hours, 156 were positive. Gadchiroli now has 680 patients under treatment.
Gondia: A death reported on Monday took Gondia’s toll to 703. There were 403 tests and 103 of them were found positive. Now, the district has 908 patients under treatment.
Bhandara: Only 157 tests were conducted in Bhandara district in last 24 hours and 49 of them were positive. With 68 recoveries reported in a day, the district now has 551 patients under treatment.
Buldhana: With 161 new cases in a day, Buldhana’s caseload reached to 89,005. Now, 1,209 patients are under treatment here.
Washim: Seventy-three new cases and 12 recoveries marked Monday in Washim district. Now, the district has 42,225 total cases of Covid, 41,222 recoveries and 639 deaths. This leaves 363 patients under treatment.
Akola: The district conducted 433 tests in a day, out of which 123 were positive. As many as 58 patients recovered. Now, Akola has 1,597 patients under treatment.
