Paul Pogba's career at Manchester United has been one of ups and downs, but with his contract set to expire in the summer, it seems that it is a story reaching its end.

You could say the narrative surrounding Pogba began many years ago when he left the club on a free after not receiving the contract he wanted and the playing time he desired. Still, even though history is now repeating itself in some ways, when he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in 2016, he was a much-changed and much-improved player.

During his second spell with United, he won the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield under Jose Mourinho. Still, he failed to secure the silverware he truly desired in the Premier League and Champions League, which led to murmurings that he was unhappy the squad was unable to compete with their rivals.

This wasn't helped by the constant interviews given by his agent Mino Raiola where he stated his much and never seemed to miss an opportunity to link the French playmaker with a move away.

Despite his obvious talent, the feeling that he was never fully committed to United has caused his fans' opinion to sour, and now many can not wait for his departure in the summer with French journalist Laurens Julien reporting that he is in contact with Paris Saint-Germain.

But is there a chance for some redemption in the eyes of the fans?

Before he got injured early this season, he showed flashes of the greatness that United spent £89 million on, registering four assists against Leeds and seven in total across his first four games.

And in his most recent press conference, Ralf Rangnick said: "Paul Pogba had his first day of training with the whole group yesterday, and in the first training session, he showed what an extraordinary player he could be.

"He will not be available for the two games this week, but hopefully after the international when we have the cup game against Middlesbrough and the away game against Burnley, I think he could be an option."

Believing that Pogba could still sign a new contract with United may be considered blue sky thinking. Still, the option is on the table for the midfielder. However, with the team struggling for creativity and needing an added push to help them back in the race for top four, in his final months at Old Trafford, he could be a key piece in the chase for European football.

In Rangnick's favoured 4-2-2-2 and a 4-2-3-1 formation, Pogba could be a significant creative force on the left-hand side, linking up well with Luke Shaw and helping United break down teams and in the press.

Overall, Pogba is still a United player for a few more months, so let's hope that during that time, he can show his true talent and leave the fans with a positive memory to remember him by.
