BATTLING -- PADDLE BOARDING. A NURSING HOME IN THOMASVILLE IS UNDER STATE INVESTIGATION, AFTER TWO PEOPLE WERE FOUND DEAD TREHE POLICE SAY THEY WERE CALLED TO PINE RIDGE HEALTH AND REHABILITATION CENTER SUNDAY NIGHT FOR A WELFARE CHECK. WXII 12’S JUSTIN SHRAIR HAS MORE FROM THE SCENE, AND WHAT POLICE SAY THEY FOUND. REPORTER: THOMAILSVLE POLICE SAY WHEN THEY ARRIVED HERE SUNDAY NIGHT, THEY FOUND INADEQTEUA STINAFG. I SPOKE WITH A WOMAN WHOSE FAMILY MEMBER IS BEING TAKEN CARE OF HERE. SHE SAYS SHE WANTS TO SEE CHANGE. SAVANNA BARRETT SAYS HER GREAT GRANDMOTHER IS BEING TAKEN CARE AT PINE RIDGE HEALTH AND REHABILITATION CENTER IN THOMASVILLE. >> I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT MY GRANDMOTHER IS ABLE TO DO FOR HERSELF, SHE TAKES CAROFE HERSELANF D HAS A RIGHT MIND. SHE’S LIKE THEY ARE TAKING CARE OF US, THEY ARE CHECKING US AND THAT KIND OF RAISED MY SUSPIONCI AS TO WHAT W GASOING ON. REPORTER: THOMASVILLE POLICE SAY THEY WERE CAEDLL SUNDAY NIGHT AF TER PEOPLE REPORTED TO THEM THAT STAFF COULD NOT BE REACHED OVER THE PHONE AND HAD NOT BEEN SEEN BY SOME RESIDENTS OF THE FACILITY. WHEN POLICE GOT ON SCENE, THEY SAY, THERE WE ERONLY 3 STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT TO HELP TAKE CARE OF THE 98 PEOPLE BEING CARED FOR. WHAT RAN THROUGH YOUR MIND, WHAT DID YOU THK?IN >> INSANITY, MY GRANDMOTHER TOLD ME THAT TOO, SHE WAS LIKE THERE WAS 3 PEOPLE AND THERE ARE A BUNCH OF HALLS IN THIS PLACE AND I WAS RYVE CONCERNED BECAUSE I AM THANKFUL THAT MY GRANNY IS ABLE TO DO FOR HERSELF BUT THESE RESIDENTS THAT CAN’T DO FOR THEMSELVES THAT’S THE ONES IAS W WORRIED ABOUT. REPORT:ER POLICE SAY THEY FOUND TWO PEOPLE DEAD AND TWO PEOPLE IN CRITICAL CONDITN.IO TH SEYAY THE STAFF HAD NOTIFIED THE FAMILIES OF THE TWO WHO PEOPLE WHO HAD DIED AND THE TWO PEOP ILEN CRITICAL CONDITION WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITALS. POLICE SAY THEY BELIEVE THAT THE RECENT WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS CONTRIBUTED TO THE STAFFING ISSUES D ANWANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PROPER PROTOCOLS WERE FOLWELO SAVANNA SAYS SHE WANTS TO SEE CHANGE. >> MEOR EMPLOYEES, MORE STAFFING, BETTER FOOD, BETTER CARE. NOW DON’T GET ME WRONG THERE ARE SOME NURSES THERE THAT I TALK TO ON THE DAILY THAT CARE ABOUT THE RESIDENTS AND THEY HAVE BEEN THERE FOR YEARS. A nursing home in Thomasville is under state investigation. Police said they were called to Pine Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center Sunday night for a welfare check.CLICK HERE TO SEE RELATED STORYThomasville Police said when they arrived here Sunday night, they found inadequate staffing at this facility. WXII 12 News spoke with a woman whose family member is being taken care of here. She said there needs to be change. Savanna Barrett said her great grandmother is being taken care at Pine Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center in Thomasville. “I am very thankful that my grandmother is able to do for herself, she takes care of herself and she has a right mind,” she said. Barrett said when she spoke with her grandmother over the weekend, she told Barrett police were everywhere. “She was like, 'Savanna there’s cops all in this place.' I was like, 'what do you mean? She’s like, 'they are taking care of us, they are checking us.' And that kind of raised my suspicion as to what was going on,” she said. Thomasville police said they were called Sunday night after people reported to them that staff could not be reached over the phone and had not been seen by some residents of the facility. When police got on scene, they said, there were only three staff members present to help take care of the 98 people being cared for. “Insanity, my grandmother told me that too, she was like, there was three people and there are a bunch of halls in this place and I was very concerned because I am thankful that my granny is able to do for herself but these residents that can’t do for themselves, that’s the ones I was worried about,” she said. Police said other area first responders were called in. Police said they found two people dead and two people in critical condition. They said the staff had notified the families of the two people who had died and the two people in critical condition were taken to hospitals. Police said they believe that the recent weather and road conditions contributed to the staffing issues and want to make sure that the proper protocols were followed.Savanna said she wants to see change. “More employees, more staffing, better food, better care. Now don’t get me wrong there are some nurses into that I talk to on the daily that care about the residents and they have been there for years. Let’s see what happens when the news goes away and the SBI goes away,” she said. The State Bureau of Investigation, NCDHHS along with other agencies are continuing to investigate. WXII has reached out to both the facility and their parent company who runs Pine Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center and has not yet heard back. WXII 12 News has also sent in public information requests to state and federal agencies.
