PATNA: The Patna high court on Wednesday pulled up the state police and excise department for “poor enforcement of liquor prohibition law”. The court also observed that they seem to be working “in connivance with liquor smugglers in Bihar”.
While hearing a petition seeking anticipatory bail, the single bench of Justice Sandeep Kumar directed the excise commissioner-cum-IG registration of the state to furnish a cogent reply as to how many big liquor suppliers and traders have been nabbed so far and what is the stage of prosecution of those “liquor mafias”.

The anticipatory bail application filed on behalf of one Gangaram, in connection with a case lodged with Matihani police station in Begusarai district on February 19, 2020, under Section 120B of IPC and section 30A, 32 of the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, was opposed by additional public prosecutor (APP) Jharkhandi Upadhyay. This matter will be heard next on January 27.
The court expressed its anguish over the police inability to control the stockists and suppliers of illegal liquor and break their supply chain in the state.
