Tamil Nadu records 26,981 fresh Covid-19 infections, 35 deaths

CHENNAI: At least 35 people died due to Covid-19 on Wednesday, when Tamil added 26,981 new cases compared to 23888 cases on Tuesday.
"We expected an increase in cases following heightened festive activity and travel last week," said health minister Ma Subramanian. "But the cause for concern is the death among elderly. More than 80% of the deaths reported over the last few days are among people above 60 years," he said.
On Wednesday, except one 45-year-old woman all others on the list of deceased were above 60 years.
There were six people in their 60s, thirteen in their 70s, 12 in their 80s and one in 90s. On Tuesday, 24 out of 29 deaths were among people above 60 years.
On Monday, it was 16 out of 20 reported deaths and on Sunday it was 16 out of 22 deaths. Health officials say it is important for all the elderly to take at least two doses of the vaccine. "More than half the elderly population have not completed the course," health secretary J Radhakrishnan said. The weekly average of deaths TN reports every day is now 24 compared to 15 a week ago on Jan 13.
Of the 35 deaths, Chennai reported 12, chengalpet had five kancheepuram recorded three and there the two each in erode madurai and Trichy. Nine other districts - Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Vellore, Ramanathapuram, Nilgiris, Ranipet and Dindigul -- reported one death each.
At the end of the day there were 1.70 lakh active cases.
Meanwhile 1.4 lakh people above 15 years took the vaccine on Wednesday. So far 1.17 lakh people have taken precautionary dose since January 10.
