Proteas duo Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen's 204-run partnership was significant in more ways than one as they steered South Africa to victory in the opening ODI against India in Paarl on Wednesday.

On a slow and dry pitch at Boland Park, Bavuma and Van der Dussen combined for a steady and devastating partnership that took the game away from the Indians.

Skipper Bavuma scored a well-played 110 off 143 balls (eight fours) while Van der Dussen top-scored with an unbeaten 129 off just 96 deliveries (nine fours and four sixes) as South Africa posted 296/4.

It was the first 200-run partnership for South Africa against India since 2000 when Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten scored 235 in Kochi.

Bavuma and Van der Dussen's stand was also the second-highest fourth-wicket partnership against India with the highest remaining between Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Yousuf (206) in 2009.

The Proteas duo recorded the 16th highest fourth-wicket partnership in ODI cricket history and the 16th highest ODI partnership in South Africa's history.

Bavuma and Van der Dussen also claimed the third-highest fourth-wicket partnership for South Africa.

In Paarl, it was the highest fourth-wicket partnership and the second-highest partnership for any wicket at Boland Park - behind India greats Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly's 258-run stand in 2001.

Bavuma and Van der Dussen have now put together two-century partnerships with the duo also making 101 against Pakistan at the Wanderers in April last year.

The last time at least two South African batsmen registered tons in an ODI against India was back in 2015 in Mumbai.

However, South Africa's last recorded two individual centuries was back in July when Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan hit tons against Ireland in Dublin.

The Proteas take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against India following their 31-run win, with the second ODI scheduled for Friday at Boland Park.

Play starts at 10:30.
