AGRA: Supreme Court lawyer Seema Kushwaha, who had fought the Nirbhaya case in 2012 and is currently the lawyer of the kin of the Hathras gang rape and murder victim, joined Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Thursday in the presence of all-India general secretary of the party Satish Chandra Misra.

“Crime against women has increased in UP.
I am fighting several cases of rape and murder, whose victims have been Dalits, like the Hathras case. But now I want to work on policy-making and that is only possible by joining politics,” she said, adding that she has not decided to contest elections so far but if the party gives her any responsibility then she will take it up.
Kushwaha said she is joining BSP to ensure justice to the weaker sections of society. Last year in July she had founded the Samradh Bharat Trust to provide legal assistance to women free of cost.

She officially became Nirbhaya’s lawyer in 2014 and demanded capital punishment for the four adult convicts as soon as possible. On 24 January 2014, she joined Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust, founded by the victim’s parents, to assist women who have experienced violence find shelter and legal assistance.
In 2020, she offered legal assistance to the family of the 19-year-old Hathras rape and murder victim. She was later threatened by a lawyer in a courtroom in Hathras during case proceedings, but she has not stopped representing the family in court.
