Former defender Paul Parker believes Aston Villa ace John McGinn would be a "fantastic signing" for Manchester United, amid reports connecting the Scotland international with a move to Old Trafford.

A report by the Daily Telegraph earlier this week claimed that the Villa midfielder, who joined the club from Hibernian back in the summer of 2018, is on a list of midfield targets for United ahead of the summer transfer window opening in July.

The Reds want to add to their midfield options and McGinn is a player they have reportedly identified as an option to improve that area of the team.

McGinn, who has scored three times and claimed two assists in 17 Premier League appearances this season, has gone from strength-to-strength since crossing the England-Scotland border almost four years ago, developing into one of the best equipped all-round midfielders in the Premier League.

Capable of shooting from distance and being energetic with and without the ball, the 27-year-old, according to former United man Parker, has plenty of credentials that would enable him to improve the Old Trafford side's midfield options.

"John McGinn has made a massive difference at Villa," Parker told kelbet.nl. "He is an influential player. He has definitely got a drive about him. If you watch him as a football person, you would take him all day long.

"John McGinn is an excellent footballer with and without the ball, to be fair to him. I think he would be a fantastic signing for Manchester United.

"He can definitely improve it (United's team) to be perfectly honest. That's something he will do. He was mentioned before, I think even Sir Alex (Ferguson) talked about him initially.

"If you look at the midfield at Manchester United, he would improve it to a point."

Although Parker, who played for the Reds between 1991 and 1996, believes McGinn would bolster United's midfield options, he has suggested the club would need to sign more players to allow the Scot's qualities to make a difference.

He continued: "Being a player of that ilk, you can say 'yes you want to sign me, but who else are you signing to play with me?'

"If you look at the midfield at Manchester United, he would improve it to a point, but you still want players around him that can play in the same manner as he plays.

"If you are going to sign a John McGinn, you don't just, in my opinion, go and make that one signing. He's a good player, but he'll become an even better player when he can play with even better players at a bigger football club.

"Start going out and playing a different vein of football, that's winning leagues and trying to win Champions Leagues. That's how you judge players."
