NEW DELHI: The quiet residential locality of Jangpura found itself on the map of the high-speed Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor a couple of months ago. The 82-km-long corridor, which was planned to terminate at Sarai Kale Khan, was extended up to this south Delhi neighbourhood.
The location of the RRTS station, however, threw a challenge to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is executing the project.
The construction site, a NCRTC spokesperson said, has poor connectivity as it is landlocked by three railway lines.
The existing connectivity through a rail bridge is only available to light vehicles due to low height clearance, while the other option is from an at-grade railway crossing, where one has to wait for frequent train movement. This meant a problem in transporting construction material to the site and also limited access to passengers once the station becomes operational by 2025.
To overcome these challenges, NCRTC has constructed a four-lane underpass near the Jangpura RRTS station, which is passing under Mathura Road. The spokesperson said the underpass would now enable movement of every type of vehicles to the station, as well as to train stabling-cum-maintenance yard being constructed at this location for all the three corridors of RRTS network.
He said the underpass would ensure smooth accessibility to the station for the residents of Ashram, Maharani Bagh, Nizamuddin and Jangpura, without the hassle of getting stuck in traffic jams, he said.
“This underpass construction has been done by box-pushing technology using precast boxes and pushing was done with the help of hydraulic jacks, without disturbing the movement of traffic,” he said.
Each underpass box is about 8.5-meter-wide and would be joined with
Reinforced Earth (RE) wall to create the ramps and loop to complete the connectivity.
“The construction of the RE wall is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year,” the spokesperson said. “This underpass is completely pedestrian friendly as about 1.5-meter-wide space on both sides is dedicated to the pedestrian movement,” he added.
“The Jangpura RRTS station is the 25th station on the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, and will also boast of the RRTS network’s operational control centre, apart from the stabling and maintenance yard, office complexes, and residential towers.”
