VADODARA: A 40-day-old baby has become possibly the youngest patient to be admitted for Covid-19 treatment at state-run SSG Hospital during the ongoing third wave.
The baby girl was shifted to SSG Hospital’s paediatric department from Jamnabai General Hospital. The newborn and her mother, residents of Navapura area of the city, have tested positive of Covid-19 during RT-PCR test.

“She was brought to us with complaint of diarrhoea, severe dehydration and feeding problems. Her mother is asymptomatic,” said Dr Sheila Aiyer, head of paediatric department at SSG Hospital.
The baby girl’s condition is stable, said Dr Aiyer.
Earlier this month, an eight-month-old boy was discharged after full recovery from Covid-19. The infant was suffering from laryngotracheobronchitis or croup - an acute infectious respiratory disease common in infants and children caused by infection of the larynx or the trachea.
“He was admitted on December 30. We kept him on respiratory support for three days. He was gradually weaned off to nasal oxygen and later shifted to general ward before getting discharged on January 7,” she said.
Aiyer said that even as Covid-19 cases are rising exponentially so far there isn’t alarming rise in hospitalisations due to Covid-19 on the paediatric side of the public hospital.
