THE LAND OF LEOPARDS
- In 2020, 482 leopards were counted as estimation was done only in limited protected areas (PAs) due to Covid situation
- In 2021, monitoring was done with camera trapping method in PAs as well as outside PAs
- WII was involved in extensive monitoring in all the PAs. NGO Wildlife Conservation Trust did camera trapping outside PAs
- One-year-old cubs not included in the estimation
- Experts feel figures may not be perfect because as per the forest department, 33 tigers and over 155 leopards have died due to various reasons in 2021
- It is possible these animals have been included in the estimation, as per experts
