12 deaths in Vidarbha, cases top 8,500 for first time in 3rd wave
Nagpur: The steep upward incline of the Covid graph continued for the fifth consecutive day on Friday. The number of new cases reported in last 24 hours reached 8,549, highest in the present wave so far. While cases are on the rise, 12 deaths were reported in Vidarbha region, again the highest in third wave.
Apart from Nagpur’s seven deaths, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Akola and Buldhana reported one Covid death each.
However, majority of the deceased patients were incidental findings of Covid. They were undergoing treatment for some other ailment and were incidentally found positive for Covid too.
Test positivity rate (TPR) of Vidarbha neared the 30% mark on Friday. Out of 28,959 tests conducted, 8,549 were positive, pegging the TPR at 29.52%. In Nagpur, 13,093 tests were conducted, out of which 4,763 were found positive — a TPR close to 37%. This could be a major indicator of the case graph reaching its peak in Vidarbha. Experts have already said that up to 9,000 cases will be reported daily with more than 30% positivity rate during the peak.
All districts reported new cases in three figures on Friday. Recovery count on Friday was 3,445, which was less than yesterday’s 3,644. Overall recovery rate of the region has reduced to 94.8%, falling below 95% for the first time in the third wave. More than 39,000 patients are under treatment in the region. However, majority of them are in home isolation. In Nagpur, 21,719 patients are under treatment.
Chandrapur: The 2,243 Covid tests conducted in the last 24 hours revealed 607 new cases on Friday. There were 262 recoveries and one death. This has left 2,926 patients under treatment. The caseload has escalated to 93,084, which includes 88,575 recoveries and 1,547 deaths. A total of 8,29,876 samples have been tested so far and 7,34,854 of these have been found negative.
Amravati: The district is just 131 shy of reaching one lakh Covid cases as 525 new cases took the caseload to 99,869 on Friday. 1,866 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. Though there were no Covid deaths, 253 recoveries of the day took the total to 95,843 for a recovery rate of 95.97%. This left 2,424 patients under treatment.

Wardha: The district reported two deaths due to coronavirus, 501 new cases and 197 recoveries on Friday, taking the caseload, recoveries and toll to 52,521, 49,133 and 1,330 respectively. 1,143 test reports were received. This leaves 1,998 patients under treatment.
Yavatmal: The district reported 368 new Covid patients in the last 24 hours. The toll remains at 1,789. Currently there are 1,369 patients under treatment, of whom 56 are in hospitals and 1,313 are in home quarantine.
The administration received 1,519 test reports and Yavatmal city recorded 119 cases, followed by 49 in Pandharkawda. Of the 74,949 patients so far, 71,791, including 90 on Friday, have recovered. The test positivity rate is 9.28%, death rate is 2.39% and daily positivity rate is 24.23%. The district has 1,711 beds for Covid patients.
Akola: A 60-year-old partially vaccinated man from Nimbi Malokar village in Balapur tehsil of Akola died on January 20. He was admitted on January 19 in critical condition. This took Akola’s Covid toll to 1,147. With 397 new cases and 257 recoveries, the district now has 2,291 patients under treatment.
Buldhana: A 70-year-old woman who was suffering from multiple organ failure died in Buldhana on Thursday. She had tested positive for Covid too. Now, Buldhana’s toll is 678. There were 1,497 tests in last 24 hours and 393 of them tested positive. 237 patients recovered. Now, 2,041 patients are under treatment in Buldhana.
Gadchiroli: A 40-year-old man, a known patient of sickle cell anaemia, died in Gadchiroli on Friday. He was Covid-positive too. This took Gadchiroli’s toll to 752. There were 1,027 tests in the region. Out of them, 221 were found positive. Now, 1,088 patients are under treatment.
Washim: There were 155 new cases and 114 recoveries on Friday in Washim. The district now has 42,700 total cases of Covid, with 41,394 of them recovered and 639 deaths. 666 patients are under treatment.
Gondia: There were 1,352 tests in Gondia in the last 24 hours and 210 of them were found positive. The recovery count on Friday was 150. Now, Gondia has 1,160 patients under treatment.
Bhandara: The district conducted 2,920 tests in last 24 hours and 409 of them were positive. 81 patients recovered. Now, 1,437 patients are under treatment.
