PANAJI: For the second day in a row, Goa recorded a drop in new Covid-19 infections with a positivity rate of 37.2% and 2,691 cases.
On Saturday, with 3,274 recoveries recorded, the active caseload dropped to 21,383 while the mortality count rose to 3602 with eight deaths.
The falling of the positivity rate to below 40%, as well as cases remaining under the 3,000-mark for yet another day has come as a relief after the state witnessed exponential rise in cases for about fortnight.
However, it will have to wait for three to four days to see if the infectivity of the virus has ebbed.
For the last few days, the state’s daily average positivity rate was continuously above 40%. In the last three days, 35 people have died after contracting the virus.
Of the eight fatalities reported on Saturday, seven people were not vaccinated and the youngest among them was a 42-year-old man from Calangute. He was brought dead to North Goa district hospital. He had comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension and had tested positive on Thursday.
Two persons – an 87-year-old man from Santa Cruz and a 69-year-old man from Telaulim - both having comorbidities, died within a few hours of hospitalisation.

A 46-year-old woman from Usgao, who was suffering from hypertension, died after over two weeks of treatment.
Four men — an 82-year-old from Khorlim, a 75-year-old from Sao Jose De Areal, a 52-year-old from Bambolim and a 64-year-old from Bandhirwada – died after a week or less period of hospital treatment. All four had comorbidities.
The state’s recovery rate rose marginally to 89.03%. While 69 patients were hospitalised, 30 were discharged.
