How big is the true number if Japan actually tested like China or some Western Modern country? Unfortunately, the world will never know?

14 ( +34 / -20 )

Folks take BOOSTER.

Also, try to take PCR tests regularly to see if you are infected so you won't be spreading the virus.

Stay home, stay safe!

Nice, numbers going down ! The quasi state of emergency is working well. Rest assured this will be over soon!

No one is getting seriously ill from Omicron.

Only 1 more seriously I'll since yesterday, the other 9,467 cases have a runny nose, sore throat and have gone to bed early with a cup of cocoa. But let's not stop the hysteria train.

6 ( +24 / -18 )

The only number that even matters anymore is severe symptoms in hospital. It could be 1 million per day, if virtually no one is in hospital dying then about time we declare a win and call it over.

We were told:

"Stop the Spread - Get Vaccinated"

80% got vaccinated, way about the 70% "herd immunity" figure.

Yet the spread has never been higher or faster.

They also said stop gathering is small places with poor ventilation.

Continue to wear mask at all times.

Allow the general public to get regularly tested!

That is not happening equals more infections!

People with concerns should stay home and walk to work.

I walked into town and got a taxi back home to avoid the crowds.

In Japan, I do the social distancing thing where millions don’t …

Most people especially the young and healthy will not be bothered by Covid, especially the Omicron variant.

Public health experts predict that the young are getting infected first, the age group will then move to older people more likely to have more than "a runny nose etc". Any of those 9,467 testing positive today who do get seriously ill (admittedly probably few) will not be doing so for about two weeks. If Omicron follows similar patterns to other countries, we are just starting out, expecting a peak in early March. At present 35% of ICU beds available are full. So you can see how very quickly hospital services could be damaged. No ICU for routine operations, accident victims, heart attacks etc Japan's ICU capacity is lower than most comparable developed countries.

lol, wasting your time. You will inevitably get Omicron anyway.

Fantastic, now it’s basically okay to think you might have the virus, test positive at a rapid test but for ‘cultural reasons’ go around as if nothing happened. BUT it’s not ok to let foreigners with three to five negative PCR tests in.

In the meantime in Korea, based on preparedness plans made before the spike of omicron relying on science, new measures are going to be in place:

http://m.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20220123000126

Yes, shortening the quarantine period from 10 to 7 days, and focusing resources - including PCR tests - on elderly and at risk groups.

Sure, they still have a surreal ban on 11 African countries that smells ignorance, but that’s 184 countries less than Japan.

Borders? Wide open, with strict quarantine regularly shortening according to scientific data. Percentage of cases per day on total cases:

local transmission: 96%

imported cases by returning Koreans: 3%

imported cases by foreigners: 1% (obviously all immediately isolated)

http://ncov.mohw.go.kr/en/bdBoardList.do?brdId=16&brdGubun=161&dataGubun=&ncvContSeq=&contSeq=&board_id=

Testing and tracing systematically from the beginning helped understanding that blaming foreigners is the proverbial finger that Japan looks at, while others try to deal with the 99% moon the finger is pointing at.

Maybe if there were 800,000 cases a day

& Maybe if there were 800,000 cases a day, the complainers will be satisfied

You need to be at death's door before you get counted as severe. To massage the numbers, the government moved the goalposts last year so that difficulty breathing is considered 'mild' to 'moderate' COVID. As of yesterday there were 2375 people hospitalised with COVID in Tokyo, 198 up on the previous day.

How big is the true number if Japan actually tested like China or some Western Modern country?

Testing like this would be a complete waste of money.

What does it matter now if the case number is 10,000 or 100,000? Hospital occupancy and deaths are what matters.

The people that are getting sick and dying from Omicron are the same that would be getting sick and dying of the common flu or pneumonia (typically 20000 per year in a country the size of the UK for example). Those illnesses cause problems for a lot of healthcare services at their peak anyway. With omicron it’s worse because they are getting six months worth in the space of two months, but the Omicron peak is pretty much gone after those two months.

Experts actually did say get the vaccine and you won’t get or transmit Covid, wont be hospitalized and won’t die.

Buckle up folks. Some experts are saying that by March of this year, half the world population will be infected.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Just as well such a large % of the population is fully vaccinated or there could be thousands of new infections a day....... Wait a minute

Vaccine passport- so vaccinated people only can travel with no COVID transmission.

Vaccine mandate- so vaccinated people only can go back to work with no COVID transmission. do it to "protect others".

COVID- 99.9% unvaccinated people, then 95, then 90, then 85, then "oh we knew that, its called a breakthrough case" and "oh it just protects yourself if you get COVID".

So what was the purpose of a vaccine passport or a vaccine mandate if a person who has done that can still transmit COVID and others they contact can still get it?

I dont even need to repost the statements of CDC, Presidents, liberal media and scientific studies who said if you get vaccinated you will not get COVID nor be able to transmit it.

All of this has now been conveniently swept under the rug and is either denied outright or if you believed it at the time you are labelled as misguided. I know of at least three posters who will be along soon to testify to this.

The I don’t care and live your life brigade probably really don’t care today. I was out several times during the day today and traffic was noticeably light compared with last week. Not sure if it was because of the quasi call or not. Supermarkets and shopping malls were busy though. Stay safe everyone.

Please state the source!

No one ever said that.

And the biggest fact to counter such false statements is the fact that not a single vaccine maker claims their vaccine was 100% effective, the best was in the 90%

So right there your claim is proven false

Read again, slowly: 13 (THIRTEEN) people with severe symptoms in a metropolis of 20 million. And that is supposed to be a problem?

Just as yesterday, no reported cases of anyone over 50. So the greying of Japan resumes....

What does it matter now if the case number is 10,000 or 100,000? Hospital occupancy and deaths are what matters.

It matters for scientific reasons and statistical reasons. Accuracy is everything for those two fields and the less data there is, the more useless all of it becomes. Heck, even from the perspective of government policy it's important. How else do you know what's really working and what's not? How can you plan for the future if you don't know what's going on in the present?

Can you give an example of a country that test everyone and have zero deaths?

The main goal is to have zero deaths and not about compete who test more people.

If test was meant to have zero deaths, certainly you guys could be right, but that is not what we are seeing.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

my wife's friend who never leaves her home has Omicron and so does her other friend who works as a nurse here and has received her third booster. I'm starting to think receiving this virus is inevitable and I really hope it does not cause long covid.

Testing and tracing systematically from the beginning helped understanding that blaming foreigners is the proverbial finger that Japan looks at, while others try to deal with the 99% moon the finger is pointing at.

Ok, so you are saying that Korea is right. Have you give a look on how many deaths Korea has? For a country that test everyone, it was supposed to have zero deaths, but it has about 30 deaths per day. What is more important data? The new cases data? The number of tests done? Or the number of deaths?

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Those who can, enjoy life to the fullest as you will never get the time back hiding at home. Time to stop the fear mongering and enjoy life.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

The main goal is to have zero deaths and not about compete who test more people.

I'd also say it's unnecessary to test as much as many countries are doing once the virus has already spread out of control, the problem though is that Japan uses case numbers to compare themselves to other countries, and other countries that know no better look at Japans numbers and wonder what they are doing right. When comparing country to country cases is a very unreliable number since we test so differently. We should only compare deaths and serious cases, which of course also won't be accurate but at least better than cases.

The main goal is to have zero deaths and not about compete who test more people.

"Zero deaths" from anything is an illusion. Every year, some people die from the common cold, or even without a known reason.

The main goal should be to keep society and the healthcare system going, and with 13 (THIRTEEN) people sick from this in a metropolis of 20 million, I wonder where you see the problem.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

They are very strict about who they admit to the hospital. If you have an underlying condition that gets exasperated by Covid they’ll tell you to suck it up till you are out of quarantine.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Been to Shinsaibashi and Namba earlier, pretty busy despite the ghastly weather. No signs of Covid concerned which is good as this virus is Nitto a major danger to the vast majority.

This wave shall peak very soon and fall rapidly, severe cases and deaths will plummet shortly after.

it’s winter, take daily vitamin D just in case you are not getting enough, even more so if you have darker skin.

Recommended by health experts and the WHO, in reducing Covid risks as well as other viruses of course

@Mitsuo Matsuyama

Japan: 146 deaths per million inhabitants. No foreigners except residents allowed for two years and counting.

Korea: 125 deaths per million inhabitants. Foreigners and citizens alike follow the same quarantine regime when entering, currently only 11 countries are banned and in two years there has been almost no restrictions aside from rigid quarantine (that went from 14 to 10 and soon 7 days).

My point about testing was that tracing demonstrated that imported cases by foreigners count for close to zero (which is intuitive given that most people living in a country are usually its citizens), and that they are identified at the airport and isolated and extremely rarely generating clusters or spreading. Extremely rarely.

One can have low mortality rates without closing the country for two years, bragging about special manners and dna, pointing fingers at foreigners and separating elevators in hotels.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

At some point, we will all get infected. The most important thing is to get vaccinated to reduce risk of becoming critically ill. At some point, the government would have to decide when to gradually ease restrictions because covid is here to stay.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Why do I need a vaccine inside me if I'm on my private property by myself?

You don’t. So you should stay on your private property.
