Arsenal offer new deal to teenage Nigeria-eligible goalkeeper ahead of next season
Published: January 23, 2022
According to information gathered from a club insider, allnigeriasoccer.com understands English Premier League club Arsenal have offered a new deal to talented teenage goalkeeper of Nigerian descent, Brian Okonkwo ahead of the 2022-2023 campaign.
With effect from July 1, 2022, Okonkwo will be among the new intake of academy scholars if he puts pen to paper on the scholarship deal that he has been offered.
It looks like he could be following in the footsteps of his elder brother Arthur Okonkwo who signed a scholarship deal with the Gunners in July 2018, along with another player of Nigerian descent Ryan Alebiosu.
According to English Football Association rules, all players in the U17 year are required to start the season on a scholarship agreement and the player may remain on a scholarship or may sign as a player under written contract subject to the regulations of the league on or after his seventeenth birthday.
Currently on schoolboy terms, Brian Okonkwo earned his first call-up to Arsenal U18s in an U18 Premier League Cup clash against West Ham United in September 2021 but was a non-playing substitute.
The 16-year-old boasts cat-like reflexes, has good command of his box and has showcased his ability to stop shots.
