It felt like Manchester United had hit rock bottom following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the 'vibes' that the Norwegian boss had fostered all but vanished.

A number of former players and pundits said the United squad didn't care and had 'thrown Solskjaer under the bus', similar claims to the ones made shortly after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho's respective stints as United boss came to an abrupt end.

Jamie Carragher was more vocal than most, with the former Liverpool defender telling Sky Sports after United's 4-1 defeat to Watford: "I've not been a manager but if you've got a crop of those players - and I don't care what anyone tells me, Manchester United have got quality players - you can't lose to Watford 4-1.

"You can't, no matter how the manager has set you up, whether he has a presence in the dressing room, whether the players respect him or not. However, he sets them up, those players and some of the performances they've given this season are an absolute disgrace."

The mood only continued to sour upon the appointment of Ralf Rangnick, with reports coming out that the players were already questioning his training methods just weeks after his arrival.

It's easy to be conned into thinking that the players don't care when so many reports of dressing room unrest are circling.

However, this evidently isn't the case, as United proved last season having rescued victory from the jaws of defeat on a number of occasions.

Saturday's clash with West Ham threatened to increase the frustration around United, with the home side struggling to break the deadlock despite having controlled the game. However, frustration turned to jubilation in the 93rd minute when Edinson Cavani's ball across the box was tapped home by Marcus Rashford.

The celebrations that followed were absolutely incredible. Cavani slid towards the Stretford End followed by Rashford and the rest of the team. Scott McTominay fell over trying to jump on the back of Alex Telles, but the most telling of all the celebrations came from a player who wasn't even on the pitch.

Having been replaced by Cavani in the 82nd minute, Fred was snuggled up in his United coat on the bench when the goal went in, but as soon as the celebrations kicked off he was sprinting down the touchline like a young Mourinho.

Introducing... United On My Mind

Just like you, we can’t get enough of Manchester United! That’s why we’ve decided to supplement our expansive United coverage on the Manchester Evening News with a more fan-oriented platform catered specifically to United fans - United On My Mind.

Writers and presenters who share your passion for the red side of Manchester will be producing written, visual and audio content to reflect the mood in the stands as well as the press box.

The Brazilian seems to finally be finding his feet under Rangnick, having scored one goal and registered three assists since the German was appointed, and his reaction to United's goal on Saturday proves the theory that the players don't care is absolute nonsense.

That 93rd-minute winner was undoubtedly a highlight in what was been a long and difficult season and hopefully we'll look back on it in the coming months as the moment United's campaign really kicked into gear.
