Maharashtra: Police nab 'tech savvy' thief in Thane

THANE: The urge to splurge on gold and online lottery by a "tech savvy" but novice pickpocket landed him in the police net as he unknowingly left trails after targeting a railway commuter aboard a local train recently, police informed.
According to the Thane railway police, the accused, a 28-year-old resident of Mumbai stealthily flicked the wallet of a Badlapur resident while he was fast asleep in a local train recently.
The accused promptly disembarked at the nearest station and rushed to the nearest ATM and somehow managed to access the pin and withdrew money even at the expense of the unsuspecting commuter.
"The accused withdrew around Rs 75000 from various machines and also purchased some gold and invested in online lottery system. Meanwhile, the victim realising the theft approached the railway police following which we registered a case under the IT act and transferred the case to the special task force. The teams tracked the ATM from where the accused withdrew the money and also accessed the CCTV footage and once identified, laid a trap for him and arrested him," informed senior inspector NG Khadakikar at the Thane railway police.
Khadakikar said they have recovered few goods purchased and withdrawn cash from the accused and are now investigating how he accused got access to the ATM pin and managed to skirt any alerts to the victim.
