Bengaluru airport processes record cargo throughput for calendar year 2021

The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport) said on Monday it recorded its highest-ever cargo tonnage, despite a turbulent pandemic environment. During the Calendar Year 2021 (CY 2021), the airport processed an all-time high tonnage of 406,688 Metric Tonnes (MT) of cargo, recording a growth of 28.6 per cent vs. 316,305MT in 2020.

Man held for raping 8-yr-old in K'taka

A 36-year-old man has been arrested for raping an eight-year-old girl here, police said on Monday. The incident took place in the limits of Nandini Layout police station. According to police, the accused Anil Kumar (36), an auto driver lived next to the girl's house. The survivor's mother is a garment factory worker and had gone to work on Saturday when the crime took place.

K'taka govt revokes rule making Kannada lang mandatory for UG courses

Karnataka government has rolled back the decision of making Kannada language mandatory for Undergraduate students. As per the new order, those students who do not want to take up the local language shall not be forced until the further orders from the High Court. The decision has been taken against the backdrop of interim order by the High Court in this regard.

K’taka milestone: 100% of target popn get 1st dose; 85% both shots

Late on Saturday, Karnataka achieved a vaccination milestone inoculating100% of the eligible population with one dose against Covid-19. The state has given two doses to more than 85% and the drive to cover teenagers (15-18 years) and administering precautionary doses to seniors is also progressing at a good pace. Health minister K Sudhakar said: “We’ve achieved two milestones: First, we’ve done 6 crore tests, which is the third highest in the country. Right from the beginning, we’ve adhered to the 5-T strategy, which includes testing. This has allowed us to contain the pandemic. Second, we’ve covered 100% of the targeted adult population with the first dose. I congratulate all the healthcare and frontline workers, senior officials and district-level officers who have worked relentlessly in achieving this. ”

Tourism hub Mysuru wore a deserted look on Saturday and Sunday, despite the government lifting Covid-induced weekend curfew across the state. Thousands of Bengalureans make a beeline to Mysuru city on weekends, but they preferred to remain indoors this weekend, despite tourist spots functioning.

Experts lambastdecision to keepschools closed

The National Coalition on the Education Emergency, a group of individuals and organizations that works in the field of education, has slammed the state government for keeping schools in Bengaluru closed while scrapping weekend curfew and allowing almost all other sectors to function. In a scathing letter, the coalition said the decision to keep schools closed will prove catastrophic for children on the academic, emotional, nutritional, social and economic fronts. “Schools in Bengaluru remain closed while malls, theatres, pubs and restaurants have been kept open… The impact is maximum for younger children, in terms of malnutrition, child abuse, child labour, and school dropout (sic),” the letter stated.

Analysis of data from the state Covid-19 War Room shows that between January 1 and 22, 12,876 children in this age group tested positive. That amounts to more than 585 children being infected each day on average. Up to January 16, the state had reported an average of 350 cases in this category having added 5,726 cases. In the past week, another 7,150 such cases have been added.

Number of kids U-10 contracting infection sees massive increase

The number of children under the age of 10 contracting Covid-19 has increased sharply this month with just more than 12,800 cases reported so far compared to 376 cases in the whole of December. At 332, it was even lower in November. So far, cases in January are already more than the total cases reported in the six months between July and December 2021. In that six months period, the state had seen 7,246 children in the age group contracting the infection, while cases in January are already 77% more, with nine days remaining.

Separate data accessed from the state war room shows that a s of January23, on ly5,164 p eople of the more than 3. 5 lakh active cases were in hospitals. Of these, 550 were in ICU and ICU-ventilator beds cumulatively, while another 1,048were inhigh depende ncyunit beds that require oxygen. The remaining were in g eneral beds. In the past 24 hours, the state has a dded 48 active containment zones, with only one a dded in Bengaluru. Overall, as on date, there are 385 containment zones, of which 319 are from outside Bengaluru.

In the past 24 hours the state conducted 2.2 lakh tests, including 44,122 rapid antigen tests (RAT), of which 50,210 returned positive, putting the test positivity rate for the day at 22. 7%. “However, one has to look at some other indicators to realise that the situation is being handled efficiently in the state,” an official said.

The total number of infections in the state is now beyond 35 lakh, while overall fatalities, including 19 on Sunday, stood at 38,582. Of the 19 deaths on Sunday, Bengaluru reported eight, Shivamogga and Tumakuru two each, and seven districts one fatality each. Health minister K Sudhakar, earlier in the day, said: “Going by the primary observations in the past two or three days, the test positivity rate in Bengaluru, which has the highest caseload in the state, has been reducing. While it is too early to say if we’ve peaked, we could come to a conclusion if the trend continues. Now, the cases outside Bengaluru are slowly increasing.” Just as cases in Bengaluru trail big cities like Mumbai and Delhi, infections in the districts trail that of the state’s capital, he said, adding “the situation is expected to stabilise in the next two-three weeks”.
