COIMBATORE: A 100-bedded siddha Covid-19 centre was opened at the Government College of Technology in Coimbatore on Monday. The centre has been established at the hostels on the campus.
Inaugurating the facility, created by the ayush department, district collector G S Sameeran said a total of 15,200 beds have been earmarked to face the Covid-19 third wave. Out of them, 12,000 beds have been allotted so far.
Although the number of cases has been increasing, hospitalisation has been minimal. “Only 11% of the allotted beds have been occupied so far. Occupancy of oxygen beds is even more minimal,” he said.
According to him, the district has been performing well when it comes to vaccination with 97.6% have been vaccinated for first dose and 82% of the eligible people have been vaccinated for second dose. Similarly, 43% of the eligible people for booster dose have got the vaccination.
He said strict action was being taken against people who violated Covid appropriate behaviour. Rs 5.53 lakh was collected as fine against violators on Sunday. Industries which were found in violation of standard operating procedures were also facing strict action. Clusters were reported in a few industries in Sulur and Pollachi and they were temporarily closed. “Some of them have reopened now,” he said.
Republic Day celebrations in the district will be a low-key affair this time. Cultural events by students and youth will not take place. Freedom fighters would be respected by officials visiting their homes, he said.
People are requested not to attend the Republic Day event at VOC Ground. They can watch it live on the district collector’s official Facebook page.
