January 21’s 4,763 cases represent the highest single-day spike in the third wave so far.
Cases recorded in January are already the fifth highest for any month in the pandemic, behind March, April and May 2021 and September 2020. In this month, 55 deaths have been reported till date. The highest number of cases in a month — 1.88 lakh — were recorded in April during the second wave.
The first wave’s highest monthly cases were 48,457, which were recorded in September 2020. With seven more days to go, January is likely to end with more cases than the first wave peak month. August 2020 had registered 24,163 cases.

The daily cases were averaging below 10 between July and December 24 last year. Over 2.35 lakh tests have been performed amid the third wave. The test positivity rate too has risen to 19.16%, which was earlier under 1 percent.
The new cases include many breakthrough infections and reinfections. The first to face the brunt of Covid onslaught were frontline and healthcare workers, though they had also started receiving booster doses. Some of them have tested positive after receiving the booster shots. Covid infection among healthcare workers at government and private hospitals has adversely affected their functioning.
Fortunately, the load in Covid wards hasn’t increased like it had during the first and second waves. With over 27,000 active cases currently, around 3% are admitted in Covid wards, but many are cases of incidental findings.
