Tottenham Hotspur are trying to reach an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Adama Traore.

The north London club tabled a £15million bid for Traore last week after missing out on the Spain international during the summer window.

Wolves are reluctantly open to selling Traore this month after failing to agree a new contract with the winger.

Traore, who celebrates his 26th birthday today, has just 18 months remaining on his contract and Fosun want to avoid making a loss on the £18m Wolves paid Middlesbrough to sign him in 2018.

Wolves head coach Bruno Lage still hopes to hang on to Traore and praised the Spaniard’s professionalism after the 2-1 win at Brentford on Saturday.

“The most important thing is the way he plays for us,” Lage said. “He played again with energy and scored the third goal again. He scored last week and scored again, and the way he celebrated with his teammates and also with me.

“He’s a team player, a big professional and a lovely guy. I’m very happy with him.”

Spurs boss Antonio Conte and director of football Fabio Paratici are determined to add Traore to their squad.

Conte has long been an admirer of Traore and wanted to sign him for Chelsea in 2017. The Italian plans to use Traore as a wing-back in his 3-4-3 system.

However, Spurs’ manager doesn’t seem overly confident of adding to his squad before the end of the window.

But he has told Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy that they “need to do something”, even if it isn’t the “best opportunity” for the club.

In an interesting admission last week, Conte said: “I know that the transfer window in January is always very difficult and it is more simple when you start the season to buy important players. In January it is not easy, but at the same time we know very well that if there is the opportunity and also if it's not the best opportunity, but we need to do something.

“Also if I repeat that this could not be the best opportunity but I think that we are in a situation where we have to try to implement the squad because the squad is not so big.”
