KALYAN: The Kalyan crime unit of Thane Police busted a gang making fake documents to secure bail for the accused in jail. The police arrested five persons, including a lawyer, and recovered several fake documents and stamps from them.
The crime branch team on Tuesday produced the accused before Kalyan sessions court and demanded their custody citing the possibility of a large-scale racket operating in different courts of Mumbai and Thane.
On police request, the judge granted the four-day custody of the accused to the cops.
The Kalyan crime branch sources said that recently, the crime branch team had received information that some of the accused arrested for serious offences were being given bail by using forged documents and such a gang was active in Kalyan court.
After getting information, senior police inspector Kishor Shirsath formed a team of police officers -- Bhushan Dayama, Mohan Kalamkar, Vinod Channe, Mohan and Khandare.
Based on the information they received, the team launched an investigation. The team during the probe on Monday received information about the accused coming to Kalyan court with the intention to secure bail for a murder accused arrested by Dombivli GRP.
Acting on the information, the team nabbed lawyer Rafiq Sheikh, his father Hameed Hashmi, bogus bail guarantor Santosh Morya and Jaipal Jogiri from court premises before they could succeed to get bail for the murder-accused.

The team during interrogation learnt that the fifth accused, Chandrakant Khamkar, who used to prepare forged documents, stays in Vasai, and the crime branch team later arrested him.
Shirsath told TOI, “Initially, the lawyer Rafiq Sheikh during interrogation told us that all documents were genuine, but on further probing, we found the paperwork to be forged."
Shirsath further said, “All the accused hail from Mumbai and Vasai areas and we strongly suspect that many accused in different courts in Mumbai and Thane have secured bails using such forged documents. We have taken their custody to expose same."
