MANIPAL: The organs from a 57-year-old brain-dead woman, who met with an accident in Karnataka's Davanagere, were successfully harvested at the Kasturba Hospital on Tuesday.
The hospital stated that following a road accident that occurred at 4pm on Saturday at Gummanur Road, Gudalu village, near Davangere, Indiramma B M, wife of Nanjundappa H N, was admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, the next day.
She was severely injured and brought to the hospital for further treatment.
Despite doctors’ efforts to save her, the prognosis was poor, and she did not show any signs of recovery. Indramma was declared brain-dead by the doctors twice officially, at an interval of six hours, at 10.29am and 4.53pm on Monday, under the protocols and procedures of the Human Rights Act. Subsequently, the patient’s husband, Nanjundappa H N, expressed willingness to donate viable organs like heart and heart valves, two kidneys and two corneas, that were harvested, and helped to save the lives of six people.
As per Jeevasarthakathe protocols, two corneas and a kidney were retained by Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, for registered patients, a kidney was sent to Yenepoya Hospital, Mangaluru and heart and heart valve was sent to the patients of MGM Hospital, Chennai.
Nanjundappa said, “Organ donation is a noble cause, and my wife has committed a great deed even in her death.”
Medical superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, “Organ donation helps save lives.” He thanked Indramma’s family for making the decision to donate her organs.
The harvested organs were transferred to all the recipients’ hospitals, with the support of the Udupi district police, from Manipal. Mangaluru International Airport facilitated speedy clearance of retrieved organs from Mangaluru to Chennai. The heart and heart valve reached Mangaluru via Udupi, from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, through a green corridor.
