Recoveries top Covid cases after a month; 12 dead in Pune

The number of people recovering from Covid-19 infection (11,638) exceeded fresh cases (10,981) after a gap of 28 days in the Pune Metropolitan Region on Tuesday. Besides, 12 more patients succumbed to the infection in the region in the last 24 hours.

PUNE: The number of people recovering from Covid-19 infection (11,638) exceeded fresh cases (10,981) after a gap of 28 days in the Pune Metropolitan Region on Tuesday. Besides, 12 more patients succumbed to the infection in the region in the last 24 hours.
As many as 6,299 people recovered in Pune municipal limits as against 5,271 new cases on Tuesday, while the rural and cantonment areas together recorded 2,137 patients and 2,189 recoveries.

The rise in recoveries also helped in pushing down tally of active cases in the region to 92,973 on Tuesday as against Monday’s count of 93,642. As many as 90,126 patients were in home isolation in the region till Tuesday evening, while 2,847 were being treated at various hospitals.
With this the total caseload has surged above 13.62 lakh, while recoveries have risen above 12.49 lakh.
A report by district health officer Bhagwan Pawar stated that 26,344 samples were checked for the infection in the region on Tuesday. Of these, as many as 13,225 tests were conducted in PMC limits alone, while 7,188 samples were checked in the PCMC areas. The sample checking in the rural and cantonment areas stood at 5,931.
Heath officials said they were closely monitoring the cases in the rural as well as urban pockets. “Citizens with symptoms and those testing positive for the infection should isolate themselves without any delay to check spread,” a health official said.

Among the Tuesday’s fatalities, seven deaths were reported in the PMC limits, 3 in the PCMC areas and two in the rural parts. The region has recorded 19,399 deaths due to Covid so far.
Health officials said citizens needed to abide by Covid-appropriate behaviour in view of the Omicron spread. “Those due for their second shot should get themselves vaccinated without any further delay as studies have shown time and again that complete vaccination can help reduce severity of the disease, while mask and social distancing check its spread,” a health official said.
