Jan Covid toll touches 100 in Vidarbha
Nagpur: With 14 deaths, so far the highest single day toll of the third wave, Vidarbha Covid deaths reached 100 in the month of January on Tuesday. Nagpur has around 60 deaths alone among the Vidarbha districts. Yet, the daily toll in Nagpur has remained under 10 which also include those from other districts and rural areas this month. Amravati, with three deaths on Tuesday, is probably the only district to report more than two casualties in a day.

The victims include mostly the unvaccinated, vaccinated by comorbid patients and some incidental Covid cases. The death audit is likely to remove the incidental Covid cases later on. Yet, the regular reporting of Covid deaths in the third wave come as a warning amid laxity on the considered assumption that Omicron is a mild variant.
A day after reporting a sharp fall due to low testing, the number increased by over 300 but were far less than the Sunday tally. Data from Washim was not available till filing of this report. Vidarbha’s 10 districts reported 6,640 cases, 4,533 recoveries leaving 52,934 patients active.
In Nagpur, 4,028 cases were reported, including 2,956 from the city, 972 from rural and 100 of outside district residents. The district also reported six deaths, including five from the city and one from rural. Recoveries increased to 2,519 while 29,152 cases are active. Over 11,000 tests were performed in the day.
Bhandara: The district conducted over 3,117 tests and found 618 new cases while 248 recovered, leaving 2,490 active.
Gondia: The district found 176 positive cases. Over 1,580 patients are active while 792 tests were done and 144 patients recovered.
Akola: One patient passed away in the district which reported 320 recovered patients and 392 new cases. The active cases are 2,666.
Gadchiroli: The district recorded 43 new cases and 201 recoveries even though 1,281 patients are active.

Buldhana: The district has 2,462 active cases after 211 new cases were recorded and 206 discharged. It performed 1,278 tests.
Wardha: Two Covid positive persons died while undergoing treatment, taking the toll to 1,332 on Tuesday. Out of 1,368 reports, 400 tested positive while 131 got discharged after recovery, taking the caseload to 54,104 and recoveries to 49,934, leaving 2,891active positive under treatment.
Yavatmal: After a long gap, Yavatmal reported one death, a 70-year-old man who was admitted to the GMCH with the symptoms of Covid on Sunday. Doctors sent his swab sample to the lab and the report received on Monday evening confirmed Covid. However, he died in the night. The toll is now 1,790.
Currently, there are 1,868 active positive patients of whom 77 are in hospital isolation and 1,791 are in home quarantine.
The district received 1,057 test reports of which 124 were found positive (59 women and 65 men).
Of the 76,023 positive patients, 72,365, including 152, have recovered. The test positivity rate is 9.35 %, death rate 2.35 % and daily posotivity rate 11.73 %. The district has 1,681 beds for Covid patients.
One Omicron patient detected: One Omicron patient was confirmed by the lab in New Delhi. The 28-year-old patient had come from overseas and was admitted to the GMCH with Covid symptoms.
As a matter of procedure, the district would send 130 samples, 100 to Delhi and 30 to Pune every month. On Jan 13, the samples were sent to the Delhi-based lab and on Tuesday, the report reached here which confirmed one Omicron patient. Meanwhile, the youth has recovered, informed the district health department sources.
Chandrapur: Testing of 2,287 samples led to detection of 308 positive cases on Tuesday. With 352 recoveries and no casualties during the day, there were 3,882 active patients left under treatment. The
Covid caseload climbed up to 95,144, which includes 89,714 recoveries and 1,548 deaths. Total sample tests are 8,36,857, including 7,40,036 negative.
Amravati: Three deaths swelled the district’s toll to 1,573 on Tuesday even as a spike of 340 took the caseload to 1,01,849. The 260 recoveries took the total to 96.608 for a rate of 94.85, leaving 3,636 active cases under treatment.
