GUWAHATI: Nilkamal Bora, father of Kirtikamal Bora (22) who was shot at by police on Saturday in Assam’s Nagaon district and is currently undergoing treatment a Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), said harassing innocent people in the name of anti-drug war is unacceptable and police should stay away of it.
Nilkamal claimed that his political science graduate son, Kirtikamal, was innocent and alleged that police had played defensive by imposing attempt to murder charge against his son to divert the case.
“The incident triggered a massive protest in the district. Many organisations, political parties and civilians raised their voices against the inhuman and irresponsible act of police. After seeing all these, police have tried to divert the case by imposing attempt to murder charge,” he said. Nilkamal runs a small nursery to run his family. Kirtikamal is his second son.
He said, “Everyone in Nagaon town knows him. Nobody can point a finger at him alleging his involvement in any illegal activities. We, too, want strict police action against illegal drug trade in the district. Police have done a good job against drugs in the district. But that does not mean that police can harass innocent people. They cannot shoot anyone without a valid reason. Why would people come out on the streets if Kirtikamal was not innocent?”
Meanwhile, protests demanding justice for victim Kirtikamal and punishment for the accused police personnel continued for the third day on Tuesday in Nagaon town. Angkita Dutta, president of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, joined the protest and demanded an impartial probe into the case.
