Manchester United are yet to spend a penny this month, but that could be set to change with under a week remaining of the transfer window.

The Red Devils have been linked with the acquisition of several top talents, but their priority appears to be offloading fringe players.

Anthony Martial joined Sevilla on loan earlier this week, and both Donny van de Beek, Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard have all also been linked with short-term moves away from Old Trafford.

But that might not be where the business ends this month for United.

Ronaldo wants Real Madrid move, again

Cristiano Ronaldo has struggled since returning to United

Since his return to Old Trafford, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Cristiano Ronaldo. Rather than challenging for trophies as he would have expected and wished, the 36-year-old has spent the majority of his return to United battling critics.

The Portuguese forward has made it clear that he is unhappy with the club currently and wants to be a part of their revival, but it appears the task may be too great for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner.

According to Catalan newspaper El Nacional, Ronaldo has told his agent Jorge Mendes to open talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over a possible return if the Red Devils fail to secure Champions League football for next season.

If the deal goes ahead then United would be left with Edinson Cavani as their last remaining out and out striker.

United receive Araujo boost

Ronald Araujo has quickly become one of the most impressive defenders in the La Liga, but his spell at Barcelona could be set to conclude.

The Uruguayan defender’s contract at the Camp Nou expires in 2023 and Spanish news outlet Marca has revealed that the centre back has rejected an offer of an extension last week.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from Barca previously due to the uncertainty about his future, and thus the Daily Mail have reported that both United and Chelsea are weighing up whether to capitalise on the contract rejection.

Lingard deal to collapse

After enjoying a very successful loan spell at West Ham last season, some thought that the door may open for Lingard to become a regular again at the Theatre of Dreams – but that hasn’t been the case.

The Englishman is out of the contract at the end of the season and is ready to leave his boyhood club, though United are making that very tricky for him.

Newcastle were in talks to bring the 29-year-old playmaker to Tyneside for the rest of the season and give himself the opportunity to put himself back in the frame for an international return ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

However, The Athletic have reported that United are demanding a significant loan fee for the midfielder’s services, and in turn that has discouraged the Magpies from completing the deal and they are turning their attention elsewhere, with Tottenham’s Dele Alli the newest name mentioned.
