Covid-19: 4 514 new infections, as death toll reaches 94 491

South Africa recorded 4 514 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 590 399 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 20 new Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 94 491.

The NICD said the 4 514 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 10.6% positivity rate.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 1 163 511 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 640 885 and the Western Cape 625 847.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 30%, followed by the Western Cape with 14%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 13%; Mpumalanga 11%; Limpopo 10%; North West 9%; Free State 6%; Eastern Cape 5%; and Northern Cape 2%.

Gauteng recorded 1 376 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 645 and KwaZulu-Natal 567.

There were 183 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting period. As of Wednesday, 6 035 people were in public and private hospitals.

South Africa conducted 22 120 335 cumulative tests, of which 42 686 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 29 626 329 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 81 012 were administered on Wednesday.

To date, 16 374 573 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 181 536 vaccine doses have been administered.
